Strzala Architects involvement extended to an on-site presence throughout the entire build to provide a quality control role and ensure that the construction was carried out to achieve the highest levels of sustainability which the client expected.

Working alongside a BREEAM assessor we created a building which achieved 2 BREEAM ratings of ‘Excellent’ - one for the coach station elements, and one for the offices.

The project required a broad degree of interpretation of a set of 2D construction drawings to create a highly complex 3D model, and also required a high level of interior design to furnish and stage the interior scenes to a level of quality that would entice potential guests in the market for a five-star luxury ski experience.

The learning street also separates classrooms on the north side from administration and support spaces on the south. To the north of the school classrooms open directly out onto large macadam playgrounds with turfed areas containing nature trail play equipment, and to the south access is provided to the double height school hall which can be sub-divided for different uses including out of hours use by the community. The large site is surrounded on all sides by large playing fields exclusively for use by the school, and ample visitor and staff parking is located on the east side.

The resolution of the complex levels was to insert a circular atrium into the heart of the building, which contains glass lifts in glass shafts and is wrapped around by a staircase designed to link all levels.

Internally the narrow footprint maximises natural daylight penetration to all areas of the school including circulation corridors which have multiple break out spaces for informal teaching and library spaces throughout the school.

The project included the following elements: - Restructuring of check-in desk facilities. - Construction of a new airside secure route between new OBC and airside facilities. - Coordination with specialists for installation of security scanning facilities and ancillary acommodation. - Installation of two new access staircases / lift modifications. - Design and construction of new dedicated link from main terminal to new security zone. - Architectural design and re-theming of whole area to provide cohesive imagery following the major changes noted above.

A new internal ticket office and tourist information centre has been created, as well as public toilets and staff administration and unique accommodation. The building is a significant feature in the townscape and serves as a particularly dramatic boundary to the existing context when illuminated in the evenings.

The design team worked closely with the client body, Network Rail, the Railway Heritage Trust and the local conservation officer to produce a scheme that demonstrates a contemporary intervention within a sensitive listed building, bringing the stations functionality in line with current best practice and design.

A palette of modern materials such as an aluminium standing seam roof and external cladding sit alongside traditional materials such as reclaimed brick and local stone sills. Aluminium is chosen to create a contemporary aesthetic using a low maintenance material with a long lifespan and recyclable credentials. The use of a standing seam roof is also highly compatible with active sustainable technologies such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting.

Under Class G permitted development a new chimney stack stems from the new living space, creating a hearth and focal point both internally and externally. This is also positioned where the extension meets the original house, masking the joint between these and creating a visual harmony between existing and new.

The form of the buildings at platform level are elevated to enhance the presence of the station as a transport gateway signalling this important node. Materials have been chosen for their crisp appearance, resilient properties and continued MerseyTravel palette.

The hangar-like form of the station building is exploded in parts to allow natural light into the building where needed, creating a dynamic structure reflective of the spaces which it shelters.
